SIP-n-Sketch: SF Cityscape, in-progress
Sketchers:
The first layer of paint was applied on paper, establishing the light and dark tones for the remainder of the sketch. I removed extraneous gridlines in the sky areas but kept the grid in the highway and skyline.

Dad's Life Hacks No. 4: Simple repairs
Things aren't always going to go perfect in your life. You might have an accident, you might run into a low wall after you underestimate the distance to your car. When that happens, don't despair; try your best to fix it. Some things are not fixable, but many things are - like this 2017 Toyota RAV4 door trim damaged by running into a low wall:
Ouch, this is a painful ding. |
Try getting a quote from Auto Body shops. If the quote is too high, or they do not return your inquiries, then go online to find a replacement part. I found this one on eBay. Now, it's not an original Toyota part, but you don't really need original parts for body trim:
Look closely at the new trim, notice the screw and adhesive strip. |
Prying off the inside shell of the damaged trim, you get a sense of how it's attached and you see the cover for the screw.
Inside shell released and there is a cover tab for the screw. |
Pry off the cover tab to get to the screw. Take off the nut to release the outside clam-shell half, allowing you to remove the damaged trim from the door.
Cover tab removed to see screw/nut. |
After removing the damaged trim, use Goo-be-gone to clean off the old adhesive from the door. This will allow your replacement trim adhesive to stick to the door better. Remove the red tape from the new trim to get it ready to attach.
Starting from the outside, snap the pins into the register holes in the door. The snap-in pins have to be gently pushed into the holes until you hear a "snap". I used my knees to push them in while holding onto the door, but not too forcefully to damage the new trim.
Old trim removed, door cleaned with Goo-be-gone |
New trim snapped into place, screw replaced, inside clam-shell closed |
When all the pins are snapped into place, you might find that the top edge is not tight to the door body and you will need some clamping force to hold the trim tight to the door. One trick is to park close to a wall and use some scrap wood to push against the trim to hold it tight against the door.
Clamp struts placed against trim and wall. |

SIP-n-Sketch: Linda Mar surf check, in-progress 01
Hi SIP-n-Sketchers:
I'm squeezing in some sketch time when there are free moments in the day. It's still early in the sketch so defining elements, colors, shadows, and tone are keeping me alert. I hope you all have a chance to work on your Linda Mar surf check.

SIP-n-Sketch: New Project - Linda Mar surf check
SIP-n-Sketchers:
The new project for this month is "Linda Mar surf check". I know we said landscape, but I thought this would be more fun. It's got elements of land, but also surf and beach. Let's say it's a tribute to surfing making to an Olympic sport.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, One Way
Sketchers:
I wrapped up COVID Night Life, One Way. The final process was filling in details and adding more washes to get the colors right. Since I did not finish during our session, I added a short video of the process at the end here. The music might be cut-off due to copyright.

A new approach
At the Piedmont Art Walk, my daughter and I were approached by an architect who wanted to borrow our paintings for staging her designs at open houses. Since our paintings could be shown to new audiences, we decided why not.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, One Way In-progress Session 3, 4
Hi SIP-n-Sketchers:
Last session, we worked on more pencil line work for windows, bike rack, and street bricks, added washes to define the street lamps, and defined the skyline better.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, One Way - Session 1, 2
SIP-n-Sketchers:
First and second sessions of COVID Night Life, One Way. We discussed using thumbnails to work out composition, transferred the preferred composition to paper, and started blocking out the colors of the sketch.
I'm taking a slightly different approach to this sketch by going back to pencil line, usually my last step in previous sketches. I am testing this out for a predominantly watercolor style final sketch.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, OAK - June 2021
Hi Sketchers:
We completed the COVID Night Life, OAK, this last session. I added a few more washes to the sky, filled in the details of the sweeper truck, and completed the night lights along the horizon. I applied washes over the clouds so they can fade into the background.
Because I couldn't show my work within our 30 minute sessions, I've prepared this video for your reference.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, Airfield, In-progress Session 3
For Session 3, we added washes to the night sky to define clouds, added shadows to the clouds to present up-lighting, added washes to the asphalt to delineate old patches, and blocked out the sweeper truck geometry.
One element I forgot was the airfield safety lighting, the red lighting next to the porta-potty. I'll have to catch that this week or in the next session.

SIP-n-Sketch: COVID Night Life, Airfield In-progress Session 1.2
Hi Sketchers:
So, we started a new sketch in the COVID Night Life series with a scene of the Oakland Airport airfield at night. My first attempt was off because the scale of the main subject took up too much of the composition. In the last session, I scaled back the porta-potty and sweeper truck to allow more of the sky to be in the sketch.
This allows more of the sky to appear in the sketch, which I find attractive.
See you next time,
